It's rare that I have some quality alone time these days. So when I had two hours to spare I decided a pamper session in the form of a pedicure and a spot of shopping would help me unwind. While browsing in Debenhams I couldn't help but drift towards their wedding dresses. My 'drifting' paid off as I was astounded to find a ivory Debut ball gown for the bargain price of £33 (about $54), knocked down from £120 (about £196).
For those of you unfamiliar with the high street chain, Debenhams is a retail store with shops in the UK and Ireland. It has a wide range of clothing for men, woman and children and also specialises in wedding and bridesmaid dresses. Currently, it is having a 50% sale on some of its wedding dresses, see here. But clearly if you look hard enough you could find further bargains.
Suddenly I realised on closer inspection that it was in fact size 12, i.e. my size. Usually I am unlucky in that discounted items are never in my size so I quickly grabbed the item and tried it one in the dressing room.
The dress fit snug around my waist and hips but I felt it could be taken in a little on the bust (I am a 34C), but other than that I found no problem with it. The material was of good quality but the dress itself was as basic as you can get. There was a beaded band across the middle, and it joins at the back with ruching and drape detailing but that is it. If you were looking for a simple, elegant and uncomplicated dress that could be spruced up with some stunning jewellery and glamorous heels – this is it.
Just to be confident of the price I asked the shop assistant to scan the item and sure enough £33 it was. So would I buy it? My answer is 'yes'. Especially if you are looking for a quick, credit crunch bargain.
But perhaps this dress is best described by one of Debenham's on-line reviews: “I fell in love with this dress the moment I saw it on line but tried other dresses on in store which didn't move me like this one did. I ordered online and when it arrived and I tried it on I felt like a million dollars. The picture does not do it justice. For the price it is excellent value and outstanding quality that makes it look more expensive than it is and the back ruching and drape detail set it off perfectly. Can't wait to wear it. Highly recommend it and I guarantee you will be overwhelmed and reduced to tears, when you try it on, like I was."
