How to choose your wedding theme
Applying a theme to your wedding is a wonderful way to show off your design flair to your guests and new family says Laura Mason
It is a memorable backdrop to one of the most exciting days of your life and it brings the different elements of the occasion together in a visually stunning way. Amber Hunter, founder of the Wedding Planner School in Bristol, says: “We all know how to name tables along a theme or use a design on our stationery but how can you take things a step further. Themes don’t have to be overt or vulgar. Even a colour scheme or motif could constitute a theme and help to bring everything together so don’t put too much pressure on yourself.”
WFS guide:
1. Start with what you know: Think of things that are already familiar to you. Do you each have any hobbies, favourite films or genres, decorative tastes or places you’ve been on your travels. This way you end up with a theme that fits your personality, not a theme you think you should have.
2. Work with your surroundings: Take a good look at your venue’s architecture and decor for a source of inspiration for a theme.
3. Maintain a tasteful balance: If you choose an era from history, make sure you do your research so that styles are not confused.
4. Go beyond appearances: You can use your theme to inspire activities for your wedding too. Maybe you can hire a swing band for a 1930’s theme, play old fashioned games for a country fete theme or use speeches, dances and scenes from your favourite film themes.
