How to create the perfect wedding gift list
With so many couples living together before marriage, it is likely that they already have all the basic household items that are normally associated with the traditional wedding list. So how do couples create a list that will be both appealing to their guests and fulfill their own desires? Lorraine Loughlin from Bespoke Shoppers offers her expert advice.
Gifts for the home are still the favorite form of wedding presents from guests. Family and friends generally like to feel they have given something that both the bride and groom can use and enjoy. However giving household gifts has become more difficult, as the majority of couples have fully equipped homes. So what alternative gifts can couples come up with, that gives a modern and acceptable twist to the traditional gift list?
It is completely acceptable to choose glamorous wedding gifts. Sometimes guests are happy to spend a little more. Perhaps the bride and groom have had their eye on a valuable piece of art, a high tech piece of gadgetry or a luxury piece of furniture. There are gift list companies that allow couples to set up a contribution system, so their guests can make a financial payment and the total amount is given to the couple after the wedding to purchase the item.
Another way to make an alternative gift list more acceptable is to choose something that is part of the couple’s life. So perhaps gifts that contribute towards a hobby or interest that the bride and groom enjoy together. For example: wine to create the dream cellar; garden plants, shrubs, tools and furniture to turn the garden into the perfect outdoor space; travel vouchers to assist the love of traveling pursuits.
For the couple who simply has everything another alternative is to create a gift list that allows guests to make donations to a chosen charity. By setting up a charity donation list, it is unlikely guests will feel they cannot contribute to such a worthy cause, and this will avoid for the most part, unwanted wedding presents.
Whatever the choice, it is always good idea to explain the reason for the choice of gift in the wedding invitation, but never make guests feel they have to make a purchase. A few words explaining or choice of gift, perhaps including a picture will let guests understand your reason. It is also a good idea to try and make guests feel that they will get to see the gift they are purchasing or making a contribution to. So include in the words something that will convey this, for example ‘we look forward to opening a bottle of wine with you’ or ‘we can’t wait for you to see the garden when it is done’ or ‘we will keep you posted with the photos from all of our travels’. Whatever gift choices you make, remember it is always important to show your gratitude for whatever gifts that are received, even those that have not been asked for.
