Wedding cake designer

Choose your wedding cake designer
Keep an open mind and choose a designer you feel at ease with, says Laura Mason
Like everything for your wedding, it is good to approach your wedding cake with a rough idea of what you would like, but also with an open mind. Ooh la la cholaterie founder and professional chocolatier, Antonia Corp, says: “Many brides completely change their minds about cake options after talking to cake designers and discussing other possibilities. Remember, these people are the experts but if you have your heart set on something in particular there are always ways to incorporate it!”
WFS guide:
1. Wedding fairs and exhibitions: These are a good starting point for any bride to be, and will provide a good chance for you to meet designers, see examples, and get an idea of prices while being able to have an informal chat.
2. Research: Pull pictures out of magazines, books, internet etc that are similar to what you want to achieve, and bring swatches of fabric, pictures of your dress, and information about flowers.
3. Expertise: Many designers will be experts in certain styles e.g. chocolate or crafting sugar flowers so make sure you choose a designer with experience in the area you require.
4. Personality and joint vision: You need to find someone you feel at ease with, and that understands your design ideas, themes and the "feel" of your wedding. Talk to them as much as you can about your wedding, number of guests, venue, flowers, bridesmaids, time of year, colours etc. This will build a picture of your wedding for the designer.
5. Tasting: The cake is one of the centrepieces of the wedding so it needs to look great but don’t forget it needs to taste good too!
6. Costs: Make sure you know what's involved in the costs. Does it include delivery? What about cake stand and knife? Who will set the cake up? Cake prices vary enormously so you can get a better idea of the real costs by asking these sorts of questions.
7. Booking - Cake designer’s diaries fill up fast so you should think about booking your designer a minimum of 6 months in advance.
